Busking for Books, April 21, 2012

Every corner of State Street will be covered with music on Saturday, April 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. They’ll be playing to raise money for the local nonprofit organization Literacy Network.

Volunteers are still needed to help with the event. If you’re interested in helping, please share your contact information here, or call Shawn at 608-244-3911.

The event isn’t just about collecting dollars. It’s about changing the perception about Madison. “About 17,000 people in Dane County don’t have the essential skills to read a prescription on a bottle,” says Executive Director Jeff Burkhart. “About 38,000 don’t speak English well enough to navigate the school system. All of our classes are completely full. There’s always a waiting list.” In 2011, 526 volunteers dedicated 28,945 hours to meeting these needs.
