Sound Tribe Sector 9
July 10, 2008 - Willow Island / Barrymore Theatre

STS9

I've seen STS9 a couple times - and really enjoy their poly-rhythmic, atmospheric jams. This is one of those bands that does a brilliant job mixing rock instrumentation with electronics. Their music is jazzy and psychedelic - right in my musical sweet spot. STS9 will be performing with Umphrey's McGee at Willow Island starting at 6pm on Thursday. Afterwards, they will be playing a "Second Set" at the Barrymore starting at 11pm... Sounds like a festival night to me!

STS9 is: Hunter Brown (guitar/laptop/midi keyboard), Jeffree Lerner (percussion/laptop/handsonic) David Murphy (bass/laptop/midi keyboard), David Phipps (keyboards/laptop), and Zach Velmer (drums). And they've has just released a new album: Peaceblaster. So it should be great fun to see them touring behind this new material.

STS9 has also developed peaceblaster.com - "an informational website where fans will find copies of the Bill of Rights, speeches by Dwight Eisenhower and Martin Luther King, and links to alternative media outlets. As with the live show, the site encourages independent thought. It’s a space where people are free to stand up for the right to their own opinions, whatever they may be. The only agenda here is education." Quite interesting.

Here's a performance video that you might find enjoy.

I've included the following video for my DJ/performing artist friends of David Phipps playing with the Monome Controller

So do you have the musical energy for this? . . . Buy your combined tickets here.
