Juniper Tar Releases The Howl Street EP, Plays Release Show

Juniper Tar: the empyreumatic volatile oil obtained from the woody portion of Juniperus oxycedrus...also a great band.

Milwaukee folk-rock band, Juniper Tar, announced the release of The Howl Street EP and have planned a release show for the EP on Thursday, February 18th, at Club Garibaldi in Bay View. The show begins at 9pm with WMSE 91.7FM’s DJ Dori Zori – of WMSE’s Thursday afternoon Girlina Show – providing music. She will be followed by Juniper Tar, plus a rare and special performance by mysterious Milwaukee group, The Vulgarians.

Juniper Tar is Jason Mohr, Aaron Schleicher, Ryan Schleicher, Tuc Krueger and Chris DeMay: five close friends who first help one another mend life’s loose threads, and who secondly collaborate to create a unique and original take on Americana rock music.  Musically, Juniper Tar jumps from full, three-part harmonies with haunting piano over acoustic guitar to an attacking, three-guitar, ramshackle beauty…often within one song.

The Howl Street EP was recorded at, and named for, Howl Street Recordings in Milwaukee with engineer Shane Hochstetler. “We knew Shane was good, but we didn’t decide to record with him until we heard what he was doing with Chris DeMay’s solo record,” said Mohr. He continued, “Shane was more well-known for recording the louder, I guess, more punk rock Milwaukee bands. They always sounded good, but until we heard Chris’ recording, we had no idea how good he actually is. It turns out he has a really great ear for the more folk-rock, Americana-leaning music that we play. From the get go, he knew exactly what we wanted, and helped us find that sound that’s so hard to replicate on a recording. Shane is amazing! We liked his work so much we named the EP after his studio.”

After their release show, Juniper Tar will perform the following night – Friday, February 19th – in Madison at the High Noon Saloon, along with Strand of Oaks (Philadelphia), Common Loon (Champaign) and White Pines (Brooklyn). The band also has planned a March tour that will take them to the country’s most visible music festival, SXSW.
