Nels Cline – “Dirty Baby”

Nels Cline – “Dirty Baby”

‘Dirty Nels’ reads the cover of Mr. Cline’s latest audible offense, and a fitting notion it insinuates. A two-disc set that displays more than a few sides to the criminal mind of Cline, the perversity is most evident on the second, where an impressive cast of players join in cahoots to realize a series of fractal obscenities and hyper-condensed stylistic exploitations more commonly associated with channel surfing the radio (static included) than the studies in mood through mantra-concentration that make up healthy portions of the first disc. Like a well-executed crime, the second half’s pieces are highly structured; devious schemes that encourage foul play and necessitate miscreant minds to mingle in deceptive noir and antagonistic sneer. Though, with Cline, there is always a yang to the yin and the first half’s din coruscates with a calm assurance. Perhaps it is the misleading façade of a thief before the burglary, but I highly doubt you’ll feel robbed investing in such an arresting collection of graphic and sonic misconduct.
