Junior Brown and his hard-stomping
country rock-n-roll were in the house, or rather tent, for
a late Friday night/Saturday morning set. Strong gusts of
wind, driving rain and sundry airborne items, and a rocking
set by the popular Atmosphere over at the Field stage did not deter thousands
from packing the hill at the barn stage. The tent top provided some protection
from the elements and the huddle of bodies blocked any air from getting through
- dense, sweaty and with thoroughly enjoyable music to dance to (or shuffle
in the 6 inches of space you had). For those who need to
know, Junior Brown is playing an instrument called the "guit-steel",
an invention of his that fuses a six-string guitar with its
steel counterpart. The double-necked guitar is made by guitar
maker Michael Stevens, with Brown's current cherry version
'Big Red' made in 1995.
Cloud Cult for an early afternoon set at the Barn
Stage on Friday.
The last day's lineup had Todd Snider in for a refreshing, thoughtful and entertaining afternoon session. The alt-country/Americana
singer-songwriter from Portland, Oregon had his stock of wit and humor ready for an appreciative audience and weaved songs amidst tales of
high school football and hallucinogens.
