BONERAMA‘s
four-trombone frontline carries the brass-band concept to
a new level, playing a combination of rock ’n’ roll
and vintage New Orleans funk. The band is known for it's
live performances and Friday night will be no exception so
prepare yourself for an evening of big, brassy, no-holds-barred
sound.
BONERAMA's third album, Bringing It
Home, features live performances including originals
and covers ranging from the Meters and George Porter Jr.,
to The Beatles and Thelonious Monk. Perhaps most impressive
is the band’s cover of Led Zeppelin’s “The
Ocean”—with trombones doing the familiar background
vocals along with the big guitar riff. They’re not
a traditional brass band, but BONERAMA has brass to spare,
even with no trumpets or saxes in sight.

Band
leaders Mark Mullins and Craig Klein, former members of Harry
Connick, Jr.’s band, founded the group in 1998. Mullins and
Klein are joined by fellow trombone players Steve Suter and
Rick Trolsen, sousaphone player Matt Perrine and guitarist
Bert Cotton. BONERAMA also features a rotating cast of New
Orleans’ finest drummers, including Russell Batiste,
Stanton Moore, Eric Bolivar and Terence Higgins.
Madison
jazz ensemble the John Chimes Trio opens for BONERAMA at
Overture Center. The group features John Chimes on piano
and vocals, Al Falaschi on drums and Dave Davenport on
bass. “I didn’t choose music
as a career; it chose me,” says Chimes. He released
his sixth CD in 2007. The album, Let Out the Blues, showcases
Chimes’ trademark piano playing and singing. This performance
is part of Overture’s Take 10 series. Educators and
students through grade 12 can get $10 tickets to this show
by presenting teacher or student ID at an Overture Center
Ticket Office window. The Take 10 series is sponsored by
Group Health Cooperative-South Central Wisconsin. This performance
is welcomed by WORT 89.9 FM. |
