Elvis Perkins and his band were in fine form as they played
to a packed audience at the Rathskeller a few weekends ago. If
you have not heard of this singer-songwriter as yet, I suggest
you redeem the situation and give a spin to
Elvis Perkins in Dearland and listen to the opening
track 'Shampoo' (also found on the band's MySpace page).
When they played the song Friday night, a big cheer went up from
the crowd and those familiar with the song could not help themselves
from singing along... including me. The song is from the band's
second record (on the super cool indie label XL Recordings),
beautifully recorded and features hauntingly unique melodies
and songs filled with both joy and sorrow. Eminently listenable!
Also, don't forget to check out the band's 2007 debut album Ash
Wednesday. I
picked up a copy at the show and have been enjoying it on my
turntable. And I am grateful for the free download of the album
(comes with the vinyl purchase) as my pressing came with some
unintended groove gunk from the factory ;(. Anyhow, here are
some pictures from the show that featured the band from the Dearland album
- Brigham Brough on bass, singing, saxophones, other instruments;
Wyndham Boylan-Garnett on the organ, harmonium, trombone, guitar,
and singing; Nick Kinsey on drums, clarinet, and also singing;
with Elvis Perkins singing and playing guitar and harmonica.
As always, please feel free to e-mail us
with your comments and photo enquiries. See you at the next show - Ankur |
