Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings w/ Menahan Street Band

At last night’s Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings Show at the Barrymore in Madison we indulged in our nation’s finest soul groove revivalist band. The Dap-King Crew served up a long and tasty hot bowl of old school, hambone funk, while Sharon head-chefed a post-Thanksgiving flavorsome mow-down. Ms. Jones invoked a Tina Turner, James Brown and a funky Janet Jackson and provided a |

shoeless dance tribute to her West African and Native American ancestors. Not only did Sharon get us lathered in her ultra-high energy womanliness, often inviting locals on stage to bask in her sweaty gyrations, but she also delivered timely messages on our checkered American history, staying true to oneself and political change.
Throughout the night, the Dap-Kings, cut out of that Antibalas (http://www.antibalas.com) funky-Brooklyn cloth and featuring some hard working horn players, were an unfailing and powerful compliment for Sharon’s soulful singing.

I’d highly recommend trying to catch this crew in the future for Sharon’s version of “What have you done for me lately” and encourage a quick pick up of the group’s “100 days, 100 nights” record. Or, if that horn-charged Brooklyn-instrumental is your thing, check out “Make the Road by Walking” from Sharon’s opening act - the Menahan Street Band. Last night, the band also featured the highly recommended, soul-bearing enthusiasm of a potential James Brown successor - Mr. Charles Bradley. [Review by: Sam Adams] |
