Andrew
Bird with Dosh
at Union Theatre on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 8:00 pm
Andrew Bird's upcoming performance
at the Union Theatre has been on our Picks list for a couple months
now. His music is subtle and witty - and best appreciated with
close listening. I can think of no greater venue in Madison to
see this artist than the Union Theatre because I'm a big fan of
its acoustics. So I hope you've got your tickets, or get them
soon!
Andrew
Bird is a Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist, whose album
Andrew
Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs wound up
on many Top 10 Lists for 2005 - including those of Magnet, Paste
and The Onion. His most recent release, Armchair Apocrypha
- has also been well-received by fans and critics alike.
Bird's music is eclectic, his wordcraft clever, and his live performance
should be fascinating to watch. Bird uses pedal controlled loops
to layer waves of violin, guitar, percussion and, yes. . . whistling,
to build a soundscape that ranges from spare and haunting to grand
and symphonic.
I've not seen him before - but I'm really interested to check
him out. Although he typically performs solo, he is touring now
with Martin Dosh - a kindred "one-man band" from Minneapolis whose
music is rooted in electronica and experimental genres.
There are some neat photos of Andrew Bird performing here.
And you can listen to Bird's "Heretic" as well as "Um,
Circles and Squares" - a Dosh/Bird collaboration from Dosh's
most recent release in the Listening
Room.
This should be a very good show and I hope to see you there. Tickets
are available for purchase online at www.uniontheater.wisc.edu,
over the phone at 608-262-2201, or at the box office (Park St.
side of Memorial Union).
Our Chicago area friends might also be interested in catching
Andrew Bird on September 8th at the infamous Hideout
Block Party in Chicago.
