I listen to
music almost all the time - well, let's say ¾ of my waking
hours. . . So I like to mix it up a bit. Recently, I've
been listening to The Fiery Furnaces in anticipation of
their upcoming appearance here.
They have been described as "restless
sonic chameleons" and I can't think of a better description
for this brother-sister duo, originally from Chicago. Matthew
Friedberger is primarily responsible for the band's songwriting
and studio instrumentation, while Eleanor handles the majority
of the vocal duties. Many of their compositions include
a dizzying array of wordplay, sounds, and influences. So
I find it impossible to categorize them.
I will say that they are often a challenging
listen - and certainly are not for everyone- but they cover
more musical ideas in one song than some bands do in an
entire album. The Fiery Furnaces are renowned for reinterpreting
and rearranging their songs into longer medleys. This should
be a very interesting show.
If you enjoy the Deerhoof performance
at the Memorial Union, I'd encourage you to check this out
too.
