I’ve got to say, I am intrigued!
This is an amazing album. Pick it up. Great version of Money
i’m not as dismayed by this as the remaking of CLASH OF THE TITANS but really, is this necessary? i realize in music that the uber cover this represents is done more for respect than the $$$. still, why not re-paint the scream or american gothic and insert your artistic quirky flair.
also, peaches? really? will she be able to amend to the lyrics of brain damage eclipse to include fellatio? i can’t wait to find out. if the lips were compelled to do this they could have at least recruited some talent on par to their own.
Necessary? Perhaps not. But that is not a criteria I often apply to music.
In this particular case – released so soon after Embryonic – this album feels more like a “bonus” for the fans than anything else. I’ve listened to it a couple times over the past two weeks, and enjoy it. It’s fun to hear them cover this classic psychedelic material with a Flaming Lips flavor. It has a raw “live” quality – similar to Embryonic – which I appreciate.
I suspect that most bands enjoy the opportunity to play other band’s material now and then, especially when they can pay homage to their own influences. (Have you heard the live recording of Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade at the Great American Music Hall where they come back for the second set and play “Animals” in its entirety? You can really sense the excitement of the audience at what they are hearing.)
BTW – Peaches does a fine job with the required female vocals for Great Gig in the Sky. But bringing in Henry Rollins was an inspired choice to recreate the “musings” throughout this album.
Fans of Flaming Lips will want to hear this.
