Detroit Movement – 2014 Festival Preview
With our yearly pilgrimage to the home of techno coming up quickly this Memorial Day Weekend it is time to share Madison Music Review’s recommendations of this year’s best acts at Movement. Below you’ll find picks organized by day and time, and Soundcloud links to all the acts for your own research and enjoyment. Saturday:
2-4pm
o Mathew Hawtin – Silent Disco (Soundcloud)
- Why? The silent disco is an interesting addition to the venue situation this year. While appearing to be more of an opportunity to introduce more local talent to the larger Movement audience, it does start off on the right foot with Richie’s brother Mathew, who in festivals past has held his own more than admirably
3-4:30pm
o tINI – Beatport (Soundcloud)
- Why? tINI and her curls have been consistently crushing it at every festival this year (BPM, WMC, etc.) and I expect to see no less here.
4:30-6pm
o Monoloc – Underground (Soundcloud)
- Why? A frequent contributor to CLR, Monoloc and his hypnotic minimalism will be setting the highest expectations for the Underground stage and his CLR-produced brethren for the rest of the day.
5:30-6:30pm
o Justin Martin – Beatport (Soundcloud)
- Why? As co-label boss of Dirtybird, Justin sits on top of some of the freshest beats in tech-house. Expect him to spin some of his new tracks like Steven Jello, and just try resisting getting down and dirty.
6-7pm
o Terrence Dixon – Made in Detroit (Soundcloud)
- Why? Terrence is an eternal classic, and always brings the dance. An interesting second option during this time slot is to check out Action Bronson on the Moog stage. Bronson is more of a hip-hop artist by trade, but has a really interesting sense of humor. In fact last time I saw this massive beast of a man, he was on the stage throwing dime bags out to an underage crowd in a public park in Brooklyn. An interesting move for sure, and one (un)fortunately I doubt we’ll see repeat this year at Movement.
7-8pm
o Minx – Made in Detroit (Soundcloud)
- Why? Seeing Minx perform at Movement is always one of my favorite experiences. She is an absolute legend, and rare to ever catch outside of her hometown. Expect lots of banging house beats.
7:30-9pm
o Black Asteroid – Underground (Soundcloud)
- Why? The first time I ever caught a Black Asteroid podcast on CLR I was instantly hooked. His minimal tech sound is a perfect match for the audio and visual experiences that the Underground offers.
9-10:30pm
o Tale of Us – Red Bull Main Stage (Soundcloud)
- Why? Overall the majority of the Life & Death label has consistently proved to bring the party. Tale of Us also has a great track record this year for headlining some of the hottest parties at BPM & WMC this year. Expect them to bring the deep vibes to the main stage this year.
10:30-12am
o Claude VonStroke – Beatport (Soundcloud)
- Why? This Detroit-born DJ, and co-boss of one of the hottest labels out there always plays his best sets of the year at Detroit. Expect him to close-down Saturday with you blown-away, and hard bent to find a better banging mix at the rest of the festival. Bonus points go to Barclay for being one of the few DJs whose parents are hanging out in the VIP section of the stage.
Sunday:
12-2pm
o GABI – Made in Detroit (Soundcloud)
- Why? The 12-2pm slot is certainly a challenge to catch, especially after what will predictably be a long morning at the TV Lounge/Soul Clap party – but GABI is definitely worth the effort. Her dark ethereal tech house sound will be perfect for those who are still looking to keep dancing from last night, and those who are just interested in picking out one of the big trees to lean up against and chill.
2-3pm
o Rai Knight – Moog (Soundcloud)
- Why? Rai Knight (aka Rachel Skotarczyk) is another up-and-comer in the Detroit scene. With a diverse background and tastes in music (namely a strong folk music sound), it’s easy to see why she’s placed on the alternative Moog stage rather than the more traditional Made in Detroit stage. Not sure what to anticipate in her set, but it won’t be disappointing.
3-4:30pm
o Adriatique – Beatport (Soundcloud)
- Why? This Swiss duo was one of last year’s Radio One Future Stars, and part of the always solid Cityfox label. Although I wish their Canadian label-mates Blond:ish were making an appearance this year, Adriatique is a solid pick to start getting the beats going on Sunday.
4:30-6pm
o Martin Buttrich – Beatport (Soundcloud)
- Why? Coming hot out of solid performances at the Wisdom of the Glove BPM party and WMC, Martin is a perfect transition from daytime to evening.
5:30-7pm
o Seth Troxler – Red Bull Main Stage (Soundcloud)
- Why? Troxler is quickly becoming a main attraction to any music fest, and was my favorite set at last year’s Burning Man. With current residencies in New York, London, and Ibizia the industry has definitely latched onto his prowess. Tragically this set isn’t later in the day, but any time the old Detroit birds come back to roost it’s always an extra special set.
7:30-9pm
o Dixon – Beatport (Soundcloud)
- Why? Dixon is definitely the man to catch for the sunset. A close second pick would be Visionquest’s Shaun Reeves on the same time at the Made in Detroit (https://soundcloud.com/shaunreeves), but the minimalism his sets tend to often be is a little chill for what I’m usually feeling at this time in the evening.
10-12am
o Richie Hawtin – Red Bull Main Stage (Soundcloud)
- Why? Richie, Richie, Richie – I’m still blown away by his Plastikman set in 2010 on this stage. This eternal classic shouldn’t be missed, and his recent pop-up show at BPM with Dubfire in a tiny taqueria proves that he’s still got a sense of showmanship around him. If Richie isn’t doing it for you, Mike Huckaby will be doing a banging house set at the Made in Detroit stage.
Monday:
1-2pm
o Perseus – Moog (Soundcloud)
- Why? Coming from the very solid French Express label (from which l highly recommend Isaac Tichauer https://soundcloud.com/isaac-tichauer), and recent solid label parties at BPM and in New York, this will be a great smooooth start to the morning.
3-4:30pm
o Heidi – Beatport (Soundcloud)
- Why? Heidi always brings the jack. No matter the time and place. At the Pets Recording label party in BPM this year, Heidi brought down the house after a solid Thugfucker set with opening with a track from NOLA bounce queen Katey Red which set the precedence for the rest of the evening.
3:30-5pm
o Raiz – Underground Stage (Soundcloud)
- Why? Their set at last year’s Interface/Droid Behavior party was mesmerizing as the early-morning audience moved in a trance-like stance in the back room of The Works. If the audio is tuned right at the Underground Stage this year it should be a mind-blowing set.
7:30-9
o Jamie Jones – Red Bull Main Stage (Soundcloud)
- Why? Jamie Jones has been on a hot streak lately, and after his B2B set with Troxler at last year’s Burning Man, and an out of control party at BPM, he’s more than worth the effort to pop by. As an alternative, Pete Tong will also be doing a set on the Beatport stage that could be quite the banger.
8-9pm
o Adam X – Underground Stage (Soundcloud)
- Why? As one of the godfathers of the New York DJ scene in the 90s, Adam X is not too be missed. In fact I’m hoping for an encore performance of something similar to Transverasable Wormhole (one of Adam X’s side projects) that had a fantastic set in 2010 on the same stage. As a second option – if the sweaty Underground Stage isn’t to your liking – Bonobo is back on a major tour and is doing a set on the Moog stage.
9-10:30
o Loco Dice – Red Bull Main Stage (Soundcloud)
- Why? This one was a hard pick. Loco Dice won mostly because his set last year at Movement was absolutely killer. However you can’t go wrong with Kevin Saunderson heading up the Made in Detroit, and Jeff Mills starting his 3-hour set at the Underground.
