Preview: Dandy Warhols at Barrymore
Barrymore Theatre, Madison
September 10, 2008 – 8:00 pm – $20
Over the past couple weeks, I’ve had good friends on two different occasions tell me, as we discussed the upcoming show by the Dandy Warhols, that I HAD to see the movie DIG! I don’t know what I was doing when this film came out in 2004, but it completely escaped my notice.
Well I recently watched it, and agree – its an amazing documentary. (I guess that is why it won the Sundance Grand Jury Award for best Documentary.) I loved it – and indeed it has me really interested in checking out the upcoming Dandy Warhols show at the Barrymore.
If you’ve not seen Dig! then check it out. Here’s a link where you can watch it in its entirety:
Seven years in the making and culled from 2000 hours of footage, DIG! follows the parallel career trajectories of Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre and Courtney Taylor of the Dandy Warhols – and a musical friendship that became a pretty crazy rivalry.
DIG! is a fascinating exploration of the delicate balance between art and commerce. I think that any fan of indie music would be transfixed by this true story.
The Dandy Warhols just released a new album – Earth to Dandy Warhols a couple days ago… I think this calls for a shopping trip to Strictly Discs.
The Dandy Warhols will also be playing in our region at:
First Avenue, Minneapolis on Sept 9th
Vic Theater, Chicago on Sept 12th
