Review: A-Trak at The Majestic, May 6, 2011

A-Trak (born Alain Macklovitch) is perhaps Canada’s youngest, most famous turntablist export. Born in Montreal, Quebec and now based in New York City, this acclaimed DJ was the first to win all three major world DJ competition titles (starting at age 15) and has collaborated with the likes of Kanye West, Chromeo, and Armand Van Helden. This was my second opportunity to catch a live set by A-Trak (it was a killer show at Movement 2010 in Detroit last year) and I was not planning to miss it, ‘car-lag’ and all after a marathon drive back from New Orleans.
An interesting stage setup – a wood-frame stylized “A” – formed the backdrop for a bank of turntables, mixers, knobs and buttons, all put to judicious use by the animated, much-talented turntablist. The set-list covered a broad genre of music from hip-hop to classic rock and of course, lots of techno. And now for some pictures from the show…
