Show Review: 7 Walkers are Bill Kreutzmann, Papa Mali, George Porter Jr. and Matt Hubbard. March 25, 2011
7 Walkers is the new project featuring Grateful Dead drummer and co-founder Bill Kreutzmann, guitar master Papa Mali, legendary New Orleans bass man George Porter Jr. (The Meters, Funky Meters) and multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson, Fastball). The band was in town at The Majestic last week to present its fabulous sounding hybrid of the Bay Area sound with classic New Orleans funk. The band released their self-titled debut release last fall (November 2010 / Response Records) with nearly all of its songs co-penned by Papa Mali and longtime Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter… we have been digging the music from the album, notably “King Cotton Blues” and “For The Love of Mr. Okra” which they performed along with classic Dead tunes “Goin’ Down The Road Feelin’ Bad” and “Big Railroad Blues”… Great energy and vibe put forth by the band… and the stage backdrop of tie-dye sheets is trippy indeed… Here’s a clip of Railroad Blues from the show. Enjoy!
